I thought I’d write up a quick post on the alternatives to Flickr. I am by no means an expert in this area but I know that some of you have been looking for a way to learn about photography or a place to present your images off Flickr. Flickr I know a lot of us use Flickr and for good reason. It's a great place to have an online presence, a place to organize and display your photos. It's easy to share, give feedback, give feedback, and just feel like part of a community. JPG ... read more

Never Knew Love Like This Before

Never Knew Love Like This Before

I've been in a new relationship for about a week now.  I know, I know.  It hasn't been very long.   And  it's awfully early to be blabbing about this to all of you.  But it's got me giddy.  I certainly don't want to jinx it.  Still, I've just got to spill the beans...  Everyone always told me that it would happen when I least expected it, when I wasn't looking for it.  That always sounded like trite "wisdom" offered to console and encourage poor suckers who are up shit's creek.   But it turns out ... read more

Tell a Story

Tell a Story

March 17, 2010

Often times when I go out to shoot there's no set agenda on what I want to capture.  I'll head downtown and begin walking around looking for things that seem attention worthy.  For example, there are several homeless people that congregate in a park.  I'll often snap a pic and keep on walking. But lately, I've been being more mindful of creating a series of photos versus just one image.  There's got to be a story there, so why not tell it?  I think we get so excited to get an image we consider worthy, that ... read more

I Fought The Law

I Fought The Law

Story time!  Back when I lived in NYC, I rode the subway all.the.time.  I also liked to take photographs on the subway all.the.time.  One evening, after a a tasty but overpriced meal with a dear friend in the Village, I parted ways with my friend at West 4th and descended to the BD FV platform. And I waited. And waited. And waited. Bored out of my mind, I pulled the 5D from its neoprene sleeve and started to snap. There wasn't much going on near me, so ... read more

By Guest Blogger Abe Novy: Recently, Brad asked me to do a guest post for the blog and suggested the possibility of using a recent processing technique I had learned as a subject.  I thought of doing this, and then realized that I’d really just be using someone else’s tutorial to write about.  This is not what I wanted to do to introduce the Within A Click world to myself. What did cross my mind is the entire thought process that goes into processing an image.  In general, most of us don’t take an image SOOC ... read more

Don’t Worry About the Bread

Don’t Worry About the Bread

March 12, 2010

While thinking about our current theme, Transformations, I remembered one of my favorite quotes. American author, Barbara Kingsolver said, "If we can't, as artists, improve on real life, we should put down our pencils and go bake bread." Personally, I don't think every image has to have a meaning, sometimes art is just there to be enjoyed for what it is, or isn't. On the flip side, photography can be more powerful when it's creating for a specific purpose. The more thought and emotion put into an image, the more likely it is have a greater ... read more

A Processing Tutorial for People Who Aren’t Inclined to Follow Directions

A Processing Tutorial for People Who Aren’t Inclined to Follow Directions

Got a problem?  I am an excellent listener.  Attentive and patient.  Please, go right ahead.  I'm all ears. Got instructions?  Wait, now, what was that?  Didn't quite...must've not been... Come again? I suffer from a common disorder known in some circles as "topic-specific attention deficit disorder" or "TSADD."  (OK, so I'm the only person who calls it that. Don't sweat the details. You're not really listening anyway, are you?)  As a result, if you purport to tell me what to do, I'm probably not gonna pay a whole hell of a lot of attention to you.  Sorry, ... read more

Who we are …

Untrained and unpretentious, but neither uncommitted nor unprofessional. We each have a story and a perspective of our own. Essentially, each of us have experienced a defining episode of connection with a camera. And since that bond was formed we started living for the good light, the inimitable expression, the scene that stirs something within us, we exist inside of moments.
