Brad, I loved this article. Thanks so much for all the advice! I was recently asked to shoot a wedding in October and I was terrified to say yes. I’ve only done one in the past and it was for a very close friend who would never hate me. This article kinda motivates me to actually take the job and do my best. Thanks!

Great advice for any one-time event, and some funny antecdotes thrown in as well! Everyone always asks me if I am going to start shooting weddings. The part of me that wants to challenge myself says “Yes!”, and the part of me that does not want to take something I love and make it a job I don’t love laments the question. Maybe someday. What I do know is that the photographers willing to break away from the “standard” shots and takes chances like you have shown here are the ones that will be able to create art out of memories and not just record the day.

This was great to read. I like to know that you guys are nervous about what you are doing, yet have the confidence and creativity to get these shots that are so important.

And I completely agree about the memories. My parents, sister, brother and I attended a family friend’s wedding. Just so happened we were all able to make it. The photographer saw us laughing and drinking wine together and asked if he could take a family portrait. I specifically remember my brother looking at me and my sister as we stood posing and saying he had some “good-looking sisters”. He died about a year later and I will forever thank that photographer for doing what he probably thought was a simple thing…but look what it gave me.
